EU commends Kazakhstan’s efforts to protect women’s and children’s rights

The European Union’s Special Representative for Central Asia, Terhi Hakala, has commended Kazakhstan’s efforts in protecting women’s rights and ensuring children's safety. She noted that the law criminalizing domestic violence, adopted in the country this year, will contribute to further improvements in this area. According to the diplomat, its effective implementation requires not only stricter penalties but also extensive public awareness campaigns. These efforts will help reshape society’s perception of the issue of domestic violence.

«I think, it’s an excellent and very important first step. We saw that during the COVID times globally that this actually was accelerating. We have to keep talking about it, keep talking about domestic violence. It’s everybody’s responsibility to also implement it and that’s why I am saying that changing mindset in this respect is important. It’s about equal rights and respect for all human beings,» Hakala noted.
