A key highlight of the Astana International
Forum, opening on May 29, will be a climate session gathering top global
experts, as well as representatives from various governments, the business
community, international and non-governmental organizations, and academia. The
session aims to tackle urgent climate challenges, promote sustainable
solutions, and showcase Kazakhstan’s environmental initiatives. According to
the Ecology Ministry, the focus will be on the development and financing of
green energy and achieving carbon neutrality. Currently, renewables account for
6% of the country’s energy, with a target of 15% by 2030.
«Many countries have already adopted carbon
neutrality strategies, including Kazakhstan, which aims to reach net-zero
emissions by 2060. For developing nations, moving away from fossil fuels and
hydrocarbons remains a significant challenge. That’s why green financing is now
being directed specifically toward developing a green economy. This forum is
expected to help build consensus on allocating green funding and advancing
joint initiatives,» said Nurman Tanatov, head of the department at the Kazakh
Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
