The Regional Ecological Summit scheduled to take place
in Astana on April 22-24 has attracted the interest of international experts.
Around 3,000 participants have already registered, including representatives
from Central Asia, the European Union, and the Middle East. Among them are
heads of state, environmentalists, scientists, and representatives of
international organizations. During the forum, participants will discuss issues
related to the Aral and Caspian Seas, as well as economic resilience to
environmental risks, food security, regional ecosystems, sustainable natural
resource management, and support for the climate transition. In addition, an action
programme for the implementation of regional environmental initiatives in
partnership with the United Nations is expected to be signed. The initiative to
hold the Regional Ecological Summit was announced by President Kassym-Jomart
Tokayev at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023. The summit will
be held in partnership with the UN.
«For the United
Nations, it is a great honor to be involved in the preparations for this year’s Regional Ecological Summit. An action programme for the implementation of regional environmental initiatives in
partnership with the United Nations and the governments of Central Asian
countries for 2026-2030 is expected to be signed. Priority projects include a regional investment portfolio on climate and
the environment, a framework document on nature-based solutions, a regional
environmental performance review for Central Asian countries, the development
of partnerships in the circular economy, and the regional Green School platform,» noted Sarangoo Radnaaragchaa, UN Resident
Coordinator in Kazakhstan.
«Special attention is being given to the development of partnerships and the launch of joint initiatives. Following the thematic sessions, more than 30 joint initiatives, memorandums, and agreements aimed at expanding practical cooperation are expected to be adopted or signed. This will help ensure a transition from dialogue to action and strengthen regional cooperation,» said Kazakh Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mansur Oshurbayev.
An international exhibition of green
technologies is planned as part of the Summit. More than 30 major industrial
enterprises from Central Asian countries will showcase technologies being
implemented to improve the environmental situation in the region.
