An
encyclopedic photo book dedicated to the unique flora and fauna of the Zhaiyk
River basin was presented in Astana. The river plays a special role in the
economy and ecology of Kazakhstan. Its total length is approximately 2,500
kilometers. As the third-largest river in Europe, it originates in Russia and
flows into the Caspian Sea, with more than a thousand kilometers passing
through Kazakhstan. The Zhaiyk supports many ecosystems, contributing to the
diversity of animals and birds. The research on and natural features of these
species are captured in the book AQJAIYQ, created by scientists, experts, and
photographers. The album was created following a special expedition and
features documentary works by around 20 domestic and foreign photographers. The
authors believe the album will become a valuable resource for nature enthusiasts,
especially as all materials are published in Kazakh, Russian, and English.
«Our goal
was to raise awareness of the wildlife along the Zhaiyk River and thus promote
greater environmental understanding. The river is home to many birds,
including swans, which are a common sight. In Kazakhstan, there are around 500
bird species, with about 300 of them found along the Zhaiyk. 15 species are
listed in the Red Data Book, and six are included in the International Union
for Conservation of Nature’s list. Research can be conducted on each type of
bird living along the river. Time will tell, but we do have plans,» said Aibyn
Shagalak, Head of the creative team behind the «AQJAIYQ» photo album.
