The initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish an International Water Organization has received support from the United Nations. UN Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua, speaking at one of the platforms of the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana, described the idea as ‘timely and forward-looking.’ According to him, this step will strengthen global cooperation, help move from discussions to practical solutions, and enhance water diplomacy. The initiative will also be considered in detail at other international platforms.
«Throughout the summit, when I heard remarks by the leaders and also the other participants, I accumulated a strong sense that by gathering together here is not just for dialogue, it’s to discuss how specific and practical cooperation and action can be further implemented not only for the region but also built on the positive progress in the region and beyond the region. We highly commend the initiative by the President,» noted Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.
«Of course, this is a
highly timely initiative, and it provides exactly the mechanism for regional
cooperation, enabling the five Caspian states to move from declaring political
will to implementing concrete measures. Such an interstate program is essential
to achieving this. Therefore, on behalf of international organizations, we
strongly welcome this initiative,» said Mahir Aliyev, Coordinator, Tehran Convention Interim Secretariat.
