Threat of flooding remains across regions of Kazakhstan

The threat of flooding still remains in some regions of Kazakhstan, particularly, in Aktobe region. Rescuers are building dams along the riverbeds and put sandbags in order to prevent melt water from flooding into the villages. In addition to Uil, there is also a rise in the water level in Or and Irgiz Rivers. Three villages in Uil and Kobda districts are still disconnected due to washed out roads. Nine rural houses were flooded in Aktobe. 114 people are in evacuation points now. The work is currently underway to pump out and drain melt water from the streets and yards.

“For the last five-six days, the temperature has been above zero. Night temperatures both here and in the north are above zero. Most likely, the situation will be the same there now, but we will need to observe, each river has its own dangerous, critical levels. It has not yet reached a critical level there, therefore, the riverbed still can take the volume of the rising water,” noted Kumar Turmagambetov, spokesperson for the Department of Emergency Situations of Aktobe Region.

According to experts, the region has not seen such a large amount of water in the last five years. During all this time, three large reservoirs here were not even half filled. The situation markedly changed this year. The Sazdy reservoir is almost full. Local farmers are happy about it.

Meanwhile, flood protection measures are well underway in North Kazakhstan region. Ice blasting is being carried out in the Gabit Musirepov district to prevent jams and overflow. On the local rivers Akanburlyk and Sharyk, the water level rises by several meters during the floods.

“We broke up ice with explosives in three places. Failure to do so will probably result in the subsequent sharp water level rise, which most likely will lead to the flooding of the villages located along these rivers,” said Sanat Mukashev, District Head of the Emergency Department.

Overall, 11 villages of the district are under the threat of flooding. They may be affected by melt waters arriving from the fields as well. A bridge near Sarykol village, the construction of which started last year is also in the danger zone.

“All this melt water from arable land and hills can wash away the bridge. Accordingly, two rural districts are at risk of losing contact with the regional center. These are the Takhtabrod rural district and the Krymbet rural district,” added Nurlan Turebekov, District Deputy Governor.

Mobile rescue teams are currently working in all regions of the country. They will be deployed the entire flood period.
