Senate discusses granting science city status to Kurchatov

Kurchatov is proposed to be transformed into a science city. The issue of granting the city a special status and implementing such a pilot project was discussed today in the Senate, the Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament, during an extended meeting of the Committee on International Relations, Defense, and Security. According to its Chairman, Andrei Lukin, Senate members visited the city in the Abai region and the National Nuclear Center located there. He noted that the center serves as Kurchatov’s main enterprise, conducting effective scientific and technical activities, including cooperation with foreign enterprises. As a result, the center’s commercial revenue reached about $4 million last year. Overall, the Nuclear Center hosts unique scientific facilities, including research nuclear reactors, a materials science tokamak, and modern laboratories with cutting-edge analytical equipment. During the committee meeting, Senate members noted that granting the city a special status would have a multiplier effect - fostering scientific development, attracting personnel to the region, and increasing investment in the national economy.

«We will develop recommendations for the Government that will address key issues. First and foremost, this will involve the inclusion of the city of Kurchatov in the science city concept, which will help resolve infrastructure challenges and, most importantly, advance scientific development. The Mazhilis has already outlined a concept for the consideration of a science city, with the Almaty region, specifically the Alatau Information Technology Park, designated as the pilot project site. Additionally, we recommend that the government consider including the city of Kurchatov in this initiative,» noted Senate member Andrei Lukin.
