«Victory.» So much stands behind this word – the courage and
bravery of millions of soldiers, the hard work of the home front workers,
including those from Kazakhstan. Eighty years have passed since that victorious
May, yet the memory of their achievements will live forever. This was the focus
of the international scientific and practical conference in Astana. Military
personnel and experts from Azerbaijan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan,
Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Russia gathered to honor the memory of the
soldiers and discuss the contribution of Kazakh citizens to the victory.
According to them, one-fifth of the country’s population was drafted into the
war. Nine out of ten bullets were made from Kazakh lead.
«I am the grandson of Nagi Ilyassov, Hero of the Soviet
Union. My grandfather was drafted to the front in 1942, when he was 20. Five
years later, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. His heroism
serves as an example for young people. In my report, I talked about how the
heroes went through the war, the events that followed, and how agriculture
developed afterward,» said Begim-Murat Ilyassov, PhD Candidate in Technical
Sciences.
«During the war years, there were 497 Heroes of the Soviet
Union. However, further research has revealed
that more than 500 Kazakh citizens were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet
Union during the war. I believe that continued research will further highlight
the heroic feats of our compatriots – grandfathers and great-grandfathers – who
participated in World War II,» said Askar Mustabekov, Head of the Kazakh
National Defense University.
