Scientific and analytical center for water resources to be established in Kazakhstan

The scientific and analytical center for water resources will be established in Kazakhstan. It is expected to regulate the system of planning, management and control of the country’s water sector. According to the Kazakh Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the creation of the new organization is envisaged in the draft of a new Water Code. The document, which is expected to be submitted for review to the Kazakh Parliament by the end of the year, will cover several areas, including developing a national integrated management plan and national water information system, according to experts. The latter will provide Kazakh citizens with data on the state of water reserves and promote a careful attitude toward the environment as a whole. In addition, within developing the draft new Water Code, specialists have revised all norms defining requirements for the use and protection of water resources in the country, including in other legislative acts.

“As part of the development of a draft new Water Code, we are currently working out the regulations, which will ensure a clear delineation of functions, namely who is in charge of a certain type of work in terms of transportation of irrigation water, its utilization on irrigated areas. It is planned to introduce certain sections on land reclamation and update the Water Code. Overall, this is the sustainable utilization of water resources, and primarily it is also the strengthening of our scientific base. Given the present realities and situation, that is further climate processes and other related issues, we need to adopt a new Water Code, therefore, it is crucial,” said Meiram Arystanov, Acting Director of the branch of Kunayev Big Almaty Canal.
