Reviving ancient carpet-weaving traditions in Kazakhstan

Ancient carpet-weaving traditions are being revived in Kazakhstan. In the Kyzylorda region, unique eco-friendly items are created on an authentic wooden loom that has been in operation for over a century. According to craftswomen, the spinning and weaving machine is not only highly effective but also easy to use. Working with it brings great pleasure. Thus, users of the finished product can expect to feel positive emotions as well.

“This wooden spinning wheel is a century old. It is amazing that our grandmothers used such devices. What sets it apart is its rotational feature, which is very convenient. Weaving carpets while standing is difficult, as your legs get tired. Working in a seated position is convenient, as you can rotate the wheel when you need to,” said craftswoman Saltanat Abdiramanova.

The popularity of ancient weaving techniques is evidenced by the ‘Kiiz Basu’ (felting) online forum. Craftswomen from various regions of the country showcased their skills in felting wool and sewing traditional carpets. Among them is Mariyash Alzhanova.

“My products are made exclusively from sheep’s wool. All items, including traditional felt carpets, korzhyn (a felt bag for storing tea cups), and saddles, are created for household needs. I receive orders from museums. White felt for yurts is in demand in Aktobe and Atyrau,” said Alzhanova.

As part of the forum, organizers hosted an exhibition showcasing the full range of diverse felt carpets by domestic masters.
