The Kazakhstan judo team won four
medals at the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam 2024 in Astana. Galiya Tynbayeva
secured a gold medal, while bronze medals were earned by Yeldos Smetov in the -60
kg weight category, Bakhitzhan Abdurakhmanov in the -73 kg category, and
Abylaikhan Zhubanazar in the -81 kg category. Kazakhstan ranked fifth in the
team standings at the Grand Slam, with Japan, Italy, and China taking the top
three spots. Notably, following two days of competition in Astana, athletes for
the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris were selected. World champions,
medalists and winners of various competitions displayed their skills on the
tatami. A total of 450 judokas from 84 countries gathered in the Kazakh
capital. The Kazakhstan team was predominantly represented by young athletes.
“On the whole, this tournament
allows up to four athletes from each weight category to participate, offering a
great opportunity for our young athletes who may not have the chance to compete
in international events abroad,” said Serikbol Urazalin, Vice President of the Kazakhstan
Judo Federation.
Now, Kazakh athletes will be
preparing for the upcoming World Judo Championship in Abu Dhabi, slated to take
place from May 19 to May 23.
