The central event of Kazakh
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s visit to New York is his participation in the
general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. Addressing the
meeting, President Tokayev noted that today humanity is facing unprecedented
colossal challenges and entering another period of geopolitical confrontation.
The essence of the threat comes from the destruction of the fundamental principles
of international law, which are embodied in the UN Charter. An agreement can
only be achieved through dialogue and diplomatic solutions to conflicts. One of
those platforms is the Security Council. That UN body should be reformed and
become more representative, the Kazakh leader emphasized.
“As the current chair of the
Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Kazakhstan put forward the initiative ‘On
World Unity for a Just Peace and Harmony’. This initiative, which we invite you
to join, comprises a new security paradigm, a fair economic environment and a
clean planet. Open dialogue between the Global South and the Global North is
its central pillar,” said the Head of State.
President Tokayev focused on the
importance of solving global economic problems. Last year, almost 10 percent of
the world’s population faced hunger. Thus, according to the Kazakh President,
the exchange of information on food security between countries should be
established. It is necessary to include specific data on production volumes,
exports and imports of goods. Kazakhstan is ready to act as a regional food
supply hub, given that the country has all the necessary resources,
infrastructure and logistics. The Head of State also focused on the issue of
climate change, emphasizing that the world should strive for a carbon-free
future.
“We propose to launch the Just
Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in Kazakhstan. A gradual, sustainable and
socially responsible transition away from coal would be a big bonus for global
climate change goals. Kazakhstan’s initiative to open the Project Office for
Central Asia on Climate Change and Green Energy in Almaty can lead on these
issues. We look forward to hosting the Regional Climate Summit in Kazakhstan in
2026 under the United Nations auspices,” noted President Tokayev.
The Head of State also spoke
about the reboot of the political and economic system in the country, stressing
that those reforms are based on the principles of equality, impartiality and
freedom. Summarizing his speech, the Kazakh President again noted that the
country is open to the whole world and ready to cooperate with all states in
building a just and sustainable world.
