PACE commends reforms in Kazakhstan

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) commended the reforms being carried out in Kazakhstan. At its session in Strasbourg, discussions focused on the implementation of democratic transformations initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Particular emphasis was placed on the effectiveness of measures in the field of human rights, including strengthened protections for persons with disabilities, women, and other vulnerable groups.

«Since President Tokayev has taken over the presidency, we have witnessed a series of reforms that modernized the political system and aligned with the international standards. In 2022, the country abolished the death penalty, a historic step long advocated by the Assembly. The constitutional reforms have strengthened the role of Parliament, the independence of institutions, and the accountability of the executivesaid Zsolt Németh, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly.

«Kazakhstan has clearly defined its long-term development priorities: the rule of law, the protection of human rights, the creation of an inclusive society, and the democratization of governance through transparent procedures and a system of checks and balances. We welcome the parliamentary assembly’s constructive approach and its willingness to support Kazakhstan on its reform pathsaid Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairperson of the Senate, Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament.

Strengthening parliamentary dialogue, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring social inclusion and open justice were among the topics discussed at the roundtable Kazakhstan’s Path to Prosperity: Democratic Reforms and Unity through Parliamentary Diplomacy.
