Nuclear medicine used to treat cancer in Kazakhstan

Kazakh doctors have begun using a new method for treating cancer - theranostics. This modern personalized approach in nuclear medicine combines diagnosis and treatment within a single procedure. Patients are administered a special radiopharmaceutical that helps detect tumors. The equipment then identifies the exact location of the lesion, determines the extent of disease progression, and simultaneously targets cancerous cells without affecting healthy tissues. The unique facility is housed at the National Research Oncology Center and is the only one of its kind in Central Asia. The institution also utilizes AI-powered adaptive radiation therapy, enabling doctors to tailor treatment plans to each patient. The oncology center treats up to 20 patients a day.

«Doctors can adjust treatment plans daily based on the patient’s anatomy. This increases accuracy while reducing impact on healthy organs and tissues, which provides benefits for the patientnoted radiation oncologist Saniya Issatay, National Research Oncology Center.
