New railway to ramp up Kazakhstan’s transit and export opportunities

Kazakhstan is increasing its transport and transit potential. Thus, construction of a new bypass railway line with the Almaty-Zhetygen-Kazybek bek connection has started in the country. The branch will reduce the time of cargo delivery and transit through Kazakhstan to Central Asia, Europe, and the Caspian Sea ports. Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov took part in the ceremony of building the first link of the railway. A total of 130 kilometers of tracks will be installed and three stations will be established. It should be noted that the infrastructure project is being implemented on instructions of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

“This railway line, first of all, will speed up the passage of transit trains and reduce the time of cargo delivery to 1.5-2 days, which will result in an increase in the volume of transit traffic. It will reduce the load on the Almaty railway junction and facilitate the work of shippers and consignees. I believe that after slated for late 2024-early 2025 railway line’s commissioning, the work on receiving trains, wagons, and cargo will be improved,” said Kanat Almagambetov, Management Board Deputy Chairman for the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy National Company.

It is noteworthy that Kazakhstan continues active work on the development of railway infrastructure to ensure sustainable exports of domestic products and expansion of transit cargo traffic. For example, second railway tracks are being built on the Dostyk-Moiynty section to increase throughput capacity. In the near future, there are plans to start construction of the Darbaza-Maktaaral and Bakhty-Ayagoz railway lines. In general, more than 1,300 kilometers of railways will be built over the next three years.
