Muslims in Kazakhstan observed Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of
Power, one of the most significant nights in the Islamic calendar. It falls
within the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan. On this night, believers
offer prayers, recite the Quran, and perform good deeds. Mosques across the
country welcomed thousands of worshippers. The Islamic Cultural Center of New
York (ICCNY), the city’s largest mosque, is especially active during Ramadan.
Opened in 1991, it was built specifically for the Muslim community. More than
2,000 people visit the mosque daily during the holy month, and each night, food
is distributed to those fasting. The center also runs a school with over 100
students.
«We have special nightly prayers, and between our nightly prayers,
the Taraweeh prayers, we have guest lecturers and presenters who share short
reminders, and they address various topics from the Islamic tradition as a way
to motivate and engage with the audience, with the congregation. It’s a very
spiritually uplifting time and moments for our community, and it is done right
here in the main prayer hall,» said Zakir Ahmed, Imam at ICCNY.
