Medical tourism gains popularity in Kazakhstan

High-quality medical services, affordable prices, and a developed healthcare infrastructure are key factors driving the growing popularity of medical tourism in Kazakhstan. Patients from various countries come to Kazakhstan to improve their health. Citizens of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, and Russia, for example, often choose Shymkent for medical treatment. People from Europe also visit the city for healthcare. Complex surgeries are performed in Kazakhstan’s third-largest city. Last year alone, Kazakh doctors treated 150 foreign patients. One of them is Abdulakhai Kassymov, a citizen of Tajikistan, who came to Kazakhstan for complex neurosurgery. He had suffered a stroke that led to the blockage of a blood vessel supplying part of his brain. Local doctors advised him to undergo treatment in Kazakhstan.

«I visited the doctor at our clinic. I have high blood pressure. They did an ultrasound, examined me, and recommended I go to Kazakhstan. We called, and I came here. I walk and sleep normally, and I don’t feel dizzy,» said the patient from Tajikistan Abdulakhai Kassymov.

The patient spent only a few days in the hospital and feels much better. The main thing is that everything went smoothly, without complications and unnecessary stress. The doctors used a minimally invasive treatment method, allowing for faster recovery.

«Patients mostly come for surgeries that require high-tech equipment. In terms of complexity, these surgeries are generally classified as 4th or 5th category. Due to the shortage of specialists and the lack of experience among neurosurgeons, they come here to receive the necessary surgical care,» noted Marat Kulmirzayev, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at Shymkent City Hospital No. 2.

«The trend, of course, is on the rise. These include cardiac, orthopedic, and, of course, neurosurgical surgeries. People have already heard that we have highly qualified specialists and advanced equipment, including angiographs, MRI, and CT scanners - some of the latest models,» said Nurlybek Asylbekov, Head of the Shymkent City Health Department.

Kazakh medical specialists not only treat foreign patients but also travel abroad to share their expertise with colleagues. Experts say that patients’ choice of Kazakhstan as a medical tourism destination confirms their high level of trust.
