Kazakhstan to introduce new disability benefits

Benefits for caregivers of disabled people of the first category are planned to be introduced in Kazakhstan. The support will cover more than 24,000 citizens. The law on social protection of disabled people was presented at the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament. The document also provides for amendments to the mechanism for the provision of personal assistant services. The needs will be taken into account based on the medical and social indicators. The law provides for the division of children from 7 to 16 years old according to disability categories. This measure will set the amount of benefits depending on the severity of the child’s illness. Benefits for all categories of disabled children will be increased from 16 to 37 percent. The innovation will affect more than 31,000 children.

“In case of a loss of a wage earner, an additional sum will be paid along with disability benefits. This will increase the income of families who have lost their wage earner and have children with disabilities. This benefit will be issued to 2,000 children. Today they receive only one type of the benefit,” said Serik Shapkenov, Kazakh Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Population.
