Kazakhstan to host International Biology Olympiad for first time

Kazakhstan is set to host the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) for the first time. According to the decision of the international organizing committee, the 35th global-level competition will be held in Astana in 2024. This marks Kazakhstan’s successful entry into the global educational space. It is expected that around 330 schoolchildren, aged 14 to 19 and representing the brightest young biologists from 80 countries, will take part in the large-scale event. Teams will compete in two rounds, one theoretical and one practical. The tasks will encompass questions from fundamental areas of science, including cellular and molecular biology, animal and human anatomy and physiology, genetics and evolution, ecology, and more.

“Hosting such a large-scale event is an accomplishment and prestige for the entire educational sector of the country. Particularly, this year, four schoolchildren represented Kazakhstan in the International Biology Olympiad in the UAE. They secured two silver and two bronze medals, demonstrating a high level of knowledge,” Gazhdembek Tursunov, Director of the Daryn National Scientific and Practical Center, said.

According to the organizers, the International Biology Olympiad presents an excellent opportunity for schoolchildren to reveal their intellectual potential and demonstrate knowledge on the world stage. Victory in this annual scientific competition offers them the opportunity to receive grants for university education. It is noteworthy that over the years of participation in the IBO, Kazakh students have won a total of 90 awards, which include two gold, 20 silver and 54 bronze medals, along with 14 certificates.
