Kazakhstan to expand railway network

Kazakhstan is continuing a large-scale modernization of its transport infrastructure, with a particular focus on the development of the railway network. Over the next three years, the country plans to construct more than 1,300 kilometers of new railway lines and upgrade around 1,000 kilometers of existing track. These projects will increase the capacity of railway corridors, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen the country’s transit potential. This year, construction of the Darbaza-Maktaaral and Moiynty-Kyzylzhar railway lines is scheduled to be completed. Rail traffic on both routes is set to begin in November, helping transit freight volumes reach 55 million tonnes by 2026. The modernization of the railway sector was reviewed at a government meeting, where participants noted that new routes will be developed to provide additional access to the country’s industrial enterprises and mineral deposits. Expansion of the rail network will create new opportunities for regions, improve freight transport efficiency, and reinforce Kazakhstan’s position as a key transit hub in Eurasia.

«Rail transport accounts for 57% of the country’s total freight turnover. In addition, the railway sector provides one-third of total transport services. Transit remains the main driver of the railway industry’s development. Over the past five years, transit freight volumes have increased from 20 million to 33 million tonnes. Going forward, the figure is expected to rise to 67 million tonnes by 2030 and 100 million tonnes by 2040said Kazakh Transport Minister Nurlan Sauranbayev.
