Kazakhstan’s national symbols stored in Arctic World Archive

The state flag, emblem, and national anthem of Kazakhstan are stored in the heart of the permafrost. Digitized files of the country’s national symbols have been placed in the Arctic World Archive on the Svalbard archipelago. They were transferred there in 2021. Notably, Kazakhstan is the only country in Central Asia whose state symbols are represented in one of the most secure digital memory repositories. Today, the archive holds more than 100 items from over 30 countries, ranging from the Vatican Library to the European Space Agency. The purpose of this ‘data bunker’ is to preserve the world’s digital memory for thousands of years. This is made possible using the special Piql technology, whose uniqueness lies in the fact that the autonomous system is resistant to cyberattacks and digital threats.

«Today there are a lot of risks to information and data. Nobody can guarantee what will survive. So, this is the place to make sure that the information survives technology obsolescence, time, and aging,» said Rune Bjerkestrand, Founder of the Arctic World Archive.
