Kazakhstan’s National Bank issues over 600 types of collectible coins over years of independence

The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued more than 600 types of collectible coins over the years of the country’s Independence. Each of them is special in its own way. Some of them are dedicated to historical figures and events, others – to public holidays. For example, in 2021, the financial regulator struck medals in honor of the 30th anniversary of the country. They were issued in three versions – from silver with denominations of 5,000 and 500 tenge, and from cupronickel with a denomination of 100 tenge. According to the designers, the coins include portraits of outstanding historical figures depicted in the first series of domestic banknotes in 1993. The foreground depicts the First President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. Experts from the National Bank told about the unique technology of making coins.

“Three technologies were applied in making this coin, including gilding of the card and the portrait row, digital printing – the color flag above and, if you look closely, the interference iridescent coating which is one of the elements of a banknote. It is a decoration of the yurt’s interior called baskur. This is where all three of these technologies were used. 3,000 silver coins weighing 31.1 grams were issued as well,” said Almat Bassenov, Chief of Banknote and Coin Design Department, National Bank of Kazakhstan.
