Kazakhstan is undertaking
extensive democratic reforms and protecting human rights in full compliance
with international commitments. To this end, necessary legislative conditions
have been created, the Akorda press service reports. The country has become a
regional leader in promoting democratic principles by implementing
constitutional reforms to eliminate super-presidential powers, simplifying
party registration rules, and expanding the powers of the Majilis, a Lower
House of the Kazakh Parliament. The first-ever direct elections of governors
and mayors were held in the country. The National Kurultai operates to involve
the public in governance and decision-making. Reforms have strengthened the
human rights protection system. Legislative amendments aimed at enhancing the
independence of the judiciary have been adopted. The Human Rights Ombudsman institute
is operating in the country, and the Constitutional Court has been reinstated,
allowing all Kazakh citizens to directly address it.
