The President of Mongolia is set to pay a state visit to Kazakhstan’s capital. Political analysts say the upcoming high-level talks are expected to mark a new phase in bilateral relations. Astana and Ulaanbaatar currently maintain a stable political dialogue, significantly strengthened by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s visit in October 2024. During that visit, the sides signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership, concluded 11 agreements across various sectors, and approved a roadmap for the development of trade and economic cooperation through 2027. Last year, bilateral trade exceeded $130 million, with nearly all of it consisting of Kazakh exports. In recent years, the range of supplies has expanded: in addition to traditional bakery goods, Kazakhstan exports pharmaceuticals, plastic packaging, and processed food products. Imports from Mongolia mainly consist of textiles and meat, with meat accounting for more than 90% of total imports. The two countries have set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to $500 million.
«Optimizing
transport and logistics cooperation between Kazakhstan and Mongolia will be a
key item on the agenda of the talks between the two heads of state. This will
provide a significant boost to further development and help reach the $500
million trade target. Kazakhstan has strong potential to export not only goods
but also services, including IT services,» said Bauyrzhan
Auken, lead expert of the Asian Studies Department at the Kazakhstan Institute for
Strategic Studies under the President of Kazakhstan.
