November 15 marks the National Currency Day in Kazakhstan. 31 years ago, the tenge was introduced into circulation, becoming the country’s new unit of account. Since then, the national currency has evolved significantly. Kazakhstan’s banknotes and coins have received over 20 international awards for their quality, design, and innovative technology. Last year, the digital tenge was put into circulation, becoming the third form of the national currency. Digital cards for it are currently being issued in partnership with international payment systems. These cards are the first in the world linked to digital accounts in digital currency.
The National Bank of
Kazakhstan has also announced the launch of a new project, the «Digital
Investment Coin». These coins will be available for purchase and sale online at
any time and from any location in the world. Additionally, in celebration of National
Currency Day, the National Bank of Kazakhstan and the National Payment
Corporation have launched a pilot project for the implementation of interbank
QR payments. It is designed to facilitate fast and convenient transactions, and
the first transaction has already been completed. A phased connection of the
country’s financial institutions to the unified QR code system is planned for
2025.
