Kazakhstan abolished the death penalty in law. Senate, Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament, ratified the corresponding draft law. According to the document, the signatory countries undertake the obligations not to use the death penalty and to take all necessary measures to abolish it within their jurisdiction. The only exception is possible on the use of the death penalty in wartime. The humanization of criminal legislation has begun since the country’s independence. Last year, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to begin a procedure for joining the international protocol on the abolition of the death penalty.
