Kazakhstan and Latvia plan to
expand cooperation in the agro-industrial sector. The parties discussed
prospects for collaboration at a joint business forum in Astana. Last year, bilateral trade in agricultural
products between the two countries exceeded $51 million and the figure is
expected to grow severalfold in the near future. The two countries are also set
to strengthen their partnership in agricultural product processing, the food industry,
veterinary science, education, and the introduction of modern technologies in
the sector.
«We have proposed exploring opportunities for the deep processing of Kazakh agricultural products within Kazakhstan, followed by exports to European and other markets through the ports of Latvia. We are currently awaiting their response. If the initiative is supported, we are ready to move forward with the implementation of joint investment projects,» noted Kazakh Vice Minister of Agriculture Yermek Kenzhekhanuly.
Latvia is opening up opportunities for transporting Kazakhstan’s crop products through the Baltic region. Since last year, Kazakhstan has increased grain transit through Latvian ports, with the total volume of shipments transported through them reaching 750,000 tonnes. In turn, Latvia’s business community is gaining access, through our country, to the markets of Central Asia, China, and the Middle East.
«All Latvian ports are represented in our delegation. The logistics sector is also broadly represented. We truly hope that this visit will lead not only to many new contacts for our entrepreneurs, but also to the signing of concrete cooperation agreements,» said Jānis Irbe, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Climate and Energy of Latvia.
