Kazakhstan, Japan aim to strengthen strategic partnership

Kazakhstan and Japan are set to strengthen their strategic partnership. Trade, economic, and humanitarian cooperation were discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov and Hiroshima Prefecture Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki. Both sides emphasised the importance of continuing the Hiroshima-Semei initiative, as well as exchanging knowledge under the Mayors for Peace international movement. Governor Yuzaki highlighted the significance of cooperation between the two countries in the field of nuclear non-proliferation. Prime Minister Bektenov noted that Kazakhstan is focused on deepening cooperation with Japan in healthcare, social support for those affected by radiation, and the development and implementation of technologies in radiation medicine. He also expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for its intention to provide a grant to support efforts in mitigating the consequences of nuclear tests in Semei. Last year, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Japan reached approximately $2 billion. Over the past 20 years, Japanese businesses have invested more than $8 billion in Kazakhstan’s economy.
