Kazakhstan introduces nuclear medicine technologies for oncology treatment

Kazakh scientists at the Nuclear Medicine Center in Astana are developing medicines that enable the early diagnosis of brain and prostate cancer. Using minimal doses of radioisotopes, these drugs help detect tumors early, allowing doctors to prescribe timely and effective treatment. The Medical Centre Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration offers advanced diagnostic capabilities, where patients are injected with a radioactive drug for full-body examination.

«Nuclear energy can be applied in various sectors of the economy, for example, radiopharmaceuticals, which are used for diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases. The country has the necessary resources for this, the same radioisotopes. With not only raw materials but also new technologies produced within our country, there is potential to make a huge contribution to the economy by entering the global market,» said Sayabek Sakhiyev, Director General of the Institute of Nuclear Physics.

The Nuclear Medicine Center has developed seven different radiopharmaceuticals and plans to create two more within the next two years.
