Kazakhstan expands transit and transport potential

The construction of the second railway tracks on the Dostyk–Moiynty section is nearing completion in Kazakhstan. Train traffic on this route is set to begin as early as June. One of the country’s major infrastructure projects is currently being prepared for full commissioning. It will increase the section’s capacity fivefold, raise train speeds to up to 1,500 kilometers per day, and enhance the quality of freight transportation from China. By the end of the year, the Almaty bypass line project will also be completed. It will unload the station by 40% and cut cargo delivery times by 24 hours. In addition, new Darbaza–Maktaaral and Bakhty–Ayagoz railway lines are under construction.

«The implementation of the project will increase overall capacity by an additional 20 million tonnes toward Central Asia and by 25 million tonnes toward China. The completion of these projects is scheduled for 2026 and 2027, respectively. In addition, starting this year, large-scale development of the Trans-Kazakhstan railway corridor has begun. This corridor is a key link in the Trans-Caspian route,» noted Zhanibek Taizhanov, Chairman of the Railway and Water Transport Committee at the Kazakh Ministry of Transport.

The Ministry of Transport also reported on the development of international tourist routes. A passenger train service between Xi’an and Almaty has been launched as part of the Year of Chinese Tourism in Kazakhstan. In addition, the tourist trains ‘Jibek Joly’ and ‘Keruen Express’ have been launched on the Almaty – Turkistan – Tashkent – Samarkand – Bukhara route. These trains have already made five trips. Given the demand for these destinations, the trains will continue operating throughout this year.
