At least 7.5 trillion tenge in investment is planned
for the development of coal-fired power generation in Kazakhstan. The
corresponding national project was approved by the government following
instructions from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The document aims to ensure the country’s energy security through 2030. It envisages the
commissioning and modernization of around 8 gigawatts of capacity, including
the construction of eight new power facilities and the upgrade of 11 existing
plants. According to the
Energy Ministry, the
project will be financed through extra-budgetary sources and investment. A key
focus is the introduction of clean coal technologies and reducing environmental impact. The expansion of the sector is expected to meet growing electricity
demand driven by industrialization and the digitalization of the economy.
«Another focus of
this national project is not only adding new generation capacity, but also
overhauling, modernizing, and expanding existing coal-fired power plants. All
upgraded capacity will meet modern environmental standards, with clean coal
technologies playing a central role. This is a fundamental principle. The national project will
ensure that the growing demand for electricity is met — driven not only by
industrial development, but also by the rapid growth of artificial
intelligence, as noted by the Head of State,» said Kazakh Vice Minister
of Energy Sungat Yessimkhanov.
