Kazakhstan-China cargo transportation volume hits historic high

The volume of cargo transportation by rail between Kazakhstan and China reached a historic high last year, totaling about 32 million tonnes. According to the Transport Ministry, exports from the country to China amounted to 14 million tonnes, increasing by one million tonnes over the year. The main exports to the neighboring country’s market include iron and non-ferrous ore, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as grain cargo. As for imports, there was a five percent increase, while transit shipments through Kazakhstan grew by 19 percent, exceeding 15 million tonnes of cargo.

«The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, which is currently at its peak, should also be mentioned. The volume of container transportation along this route to Europe has increased by 43 percent, which is also a record high. This growth was driven by the opening of Kazakhstan’s terminal at the dry port of Xi’an last year. As a result, 300 container trains passed through this terminal and the Aktau port last year, marking a nearly 30-fold increase,» noted Lyazzat Stamgaziyeva, spokesperson for the Kazakh Ministry of Transport.

Cargo turnover in Kazakhstan increases in 2024

Notably, domestic cargo transportation is also on the rise. According to the relevant ministry, an increase in figures has been observed in three cities: Shymkent, Astana, and Almaty. In total, 514.5 billion tonnes-kilometres were transported by all modes of transport across the country in 2024, with a growth of 2.6 percent over the year. Nearly three million tonnes of cargo were transported by sea, showing a more than two-fold increase. Other means of transportation also show positive dynamics.

«Every year, aviation provides a 5-10 percent growth. Rail and road transportation see a growth of around 40-50 percent, which is due to the fact that our country is essentially a multimodal state. Road transport, in particular, has shown significant growth. The transition of foreign permit forms to an electronic format has further accelerated cargo transportation and reduced transit times,» Stamgaziyeva added.
