Kazakhstan and
Cyprus are strengthening cooperation in the law enforcement sphere, including
extradition of wanted persons. Members of the Senate, the Upper House of the
Kazakh Parliament, ratified several relevant international treaties that
clearly outline the procedures and regulations for such cooperation between the
parties. For example, an extradition treaty for suspects implies that their
offenses must be recognized as criminal in both countries. Additionally, the
offense must carry a minimum one-year prison sentence. Overall, the parties’
agreements encompass various aspects of criminal legal assistance.
“The approved laws are designed to
enhance cooperation between Kazakhstan and Cyprus in the law enforcement
sphere. The provisions of the agreements regulate the conditions and procedures
for extradition, as well as issues related to providing legal assistance to
citizens. We anticipate that the ratification of these agreements will increase
the effectiveness of legal cooperation between our countries in matters of
combating crime and further strengthen bilateral relations,” said Maulen
Ashimbayev, Chairperson of the Senate, the Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament.
It is noteworthy
that Kazakhstan has signed more than 20 similar extradition agreements with
other countries to date. Overall, in the field of criminal law, the country has
concluded over 70 international treaties with 34 states.
