Kazakh Tazy dog breed takes world stage

The Astana Winner 2026 international dog show took place in the Kazakh capital. Around 400 dogs of various breeds were presented at the EXPO International Exhibition Center. Special attention was drawn to the Kazakh Tazy recognized as part of the country’s national heritage. Yelena Khardina, a resident of Oskemen and head of the Tazy dog breed national club, brought one of the dogs of this breed. Her dog, Tamerlan, is an award-winning participant in international exhibitions.

«The Tazy is a breed with a history spanning hundreds, if not thousands, of years. For centuries, it saved nomads from starving and protected them from wolves. But sadly, this breed remained largely unknown to the world. I made it my goal to showcase it at all exhibitions,» said Yelena Khardina, President of the Tazy dog breed national club, Kazakh Union of Cynologists.

As of today, around 4,000 Tazy dogs are registered in Kazakhstan’s Unified Stud Book. To increase the population of the breed, the Union of Cynologists travels to remote settlements, where dogs are inspected on site. If they meet the breed standard, documents are issued and they are entered into the registry. This work helps not only to increase the population, but also to preserve the natural qualities of the breed.

«For us, the number of puppies born within our breeding system is extremely important. The number of Tazy is clearly growing, and this upward trend is evident. In 2023, when we began this large-scale effort, there were 93 puppies born. By 2025, that number had risen to 411. In other words, the birth rate has increased more than fourfold,» noted Bauyrzhan Serikkali, President of the Kazakh Union of Cynologists.

It is worth noting that a new holiday has recently been introduced in Kazakhstan – September 3 has been declared the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet. Two years ago, the breed was officially designated as the Kazakh Tazy dog breed, and specialists now have ten years to prepare the necessary international documentation for its full recognition. Last week, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with President of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale Tamás Jakkel, during which it was noted that a National Center for breeding and scientific and canine support will soon open in the Zhetisu region.
