Kazakh President takes part in Eurasian Economic Forum in Minsk

The combined economic potential of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states amounts to $2.6 trillion. In 2024, mutual trade between the countries reached $98 billion, nearly double the level recorded in 2015. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated this during the plenary session of the Eurasian Economic Forum in Minsk. According to him, the Economic Union continues to strengthen its international authority and is becoming a significant player in the global economic system. To achieve common goals, it is necessary to join efforts and seek mutually acceptable compromises. As Tokayev emphasized, modern challenges necessitate innovative approaches to economic development, with digital technologies playing a key role in this process. The President also drew attention to the intensifying global competition in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

«Undoubtedly, artificial intelligence also brings challenges typical of any technological revolution. Among them are risks such as unequal access to technology, the reduction of traditional jobs, and limitations of digital sovereignty, including dependence on global digital monopolies. There is a danger that a small group of highly developed countries may emerge as leaders of global development and take the lead in this process, while much of the modern world is left behind. I believe the EAEU should lead this process or, at least, ensure it does not fall behind,» Tokayev noted.

The Head of State proposed holding a special session next year, during Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC), dedicated to the development of artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted the country’s efforts to strengthen its capacity in this sector. In the near future, a high-performance supercomputer is set to be launched in the country. A Council for the Development of Artificial Intelligence has been established, and a special law is being planned. In addition, Kazakhstan is focusing on expanding partnerships with international universities and research centres. In this regard, the President expressed his gratitude to the Russian leadership for its support in opening a branch of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) in Kazakhstan.

«This year, the Alem.AI International Artificial Intelligence Center will open in Astana. In addition, we are working on the creation of an experimental and innovative zone, CryptoCity, which is intended to become a hub for global experts in the field of cryptocurrencies. As part of a pilot project, we plan to test legal and technological solutions related to the widespread use of digital assets. Overall, Kazakhstan is open to cooperation and invites EAEU countries to jointly participate in the launch of innovation clusters, technology parks, and startup incubators, where scientific developments and technologies can be transformed into successful commercial solutions,» Tokayev added.

According to President Tokayev, cutting-edge digital technologies are expected to provide a strong boost to trade and economic cooperation. All the necessary conditions are already in place. It is essential for the member states to act pragmatically and proactively. Kazakhstan intends to continue strengthening and advancing economic integration and is ready for consistent joint efforts to build an effective, open, and dynamic Eurasian Economic Union.
