Kazakh President receives Tokyo Governor

Astana and Tokyo may expand cooperation in digital technologies, international finance, and education. The prospects for partnership in these areas were discussed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike. The President emphasized the symbolic significance of the visit, which comes ahead of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of an expanded strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Japan. The two sides also discussed modern megacity governance. Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan is promoting the Smart City concept and is interested in exchanging experience with Tokyo—one of the world’s safest, cleanest, and most efficiently governed cities. In turn, Koike highly praised Kazakhstan’s ongoing reforms aimed at economic growth, the development of artificial intelligence, digitalization, and strengthening the country’s investment attractiveness.

The President warmly recalled his official visit to Japan last year, which elevated bilateral relations to a qualitatively new level. At the conclusion of the meeting, Tokayev awarded Koike the Order of Dostyk, First Class, for her significant contribution to strengthening friendly ties between Kazakhstan and Japan.
