The United Nations will compensate Kazakhstan about
$5 million annually for its participation in the mission on the Golan Heights.
This is outlined in an additional agreement to the memorandum of understanding
between the Kazakh government and the UN, which was ratified today by the
Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament. The original memorandum,
which defines the administrative, logistical, and financial conditions for the deployment
of Kazakh personnel and equipment in the mission, was signed by both parties
last year. It is a standard agreement for all countries involved in
peacekeeping operations. The document outlines the terms of Kazakhstan’s
military personnel participation as part of the UN Disengagement Observer Force
(UNDOF) on the Golan Heights. The country intends to continue its mission until
it is closed by the Organization. According to the relevant Ministry, 139
Kazakh peacekeepers are currently serving on the Golan Heights on the border
between Syria and Israel. They have been deployed there since March of last
year.
«The mission on the Golan Heights aims to
maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, as well as to monitor and supervise
the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces. Notably, for Kazakhstan’s
participation in this mission, the UN provides payments totaling about $5
million per year. Of this amount, about $2.4 million are payments to personnel,
while the remaining $2.6 million covers the rental of equipment, weapons, and
property. The approved monthly payment for each peacekeeper is $1,448,» noted Kazakh
Vice Minister of Defense Shaikh-Hasan Zhazykbaev.
