Kazakh government discusses development of rare and rare-earth metals industry

From raw material extraction to the production of deep processing products. Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov instructed the country’s Ministry of Industry and Construction, in collaboration with the Baiterek Holding, to develop a model for creating a cluster with a full-cycle production chain aimed at developing the rare and rare-earth metals industry. He also tasked them with addressing the creation of an internationally accredited laboratory. The development of the industry will strengthen the country's position in the global market, attract technology and capital, and expand participation in supply chains across new sectors of the economy.

Notably, Kazakhstan has organized the production of various metals, including beryllium, scandium, tantalum and niobium, bismuth, antimony, and selenium. Projects are underway for the development of lithium deposits, and plans are in place to establish the production of graphite concentrate with a focus on final product processing. This month, a tungsten concentrate production facility with a capacity of up to 3.3 million tonnes was launched in the Almaty region, with an investment of $350 million. Further plans include establishing the production of a wide range of other rare-earth metals with the active involvement of domestic financial institutions.
