Kazakh delegation reviews Turkey’s experience in building Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant

A delegation from Kazakhstan is adopting the experience of Turkey in nuclear power plants building. The domestic specialists reviewed the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. They note that a number of technologies can be used in the future in Kazakhstan.

“A more detailed work with the participation of highly specialized experts will be carried out in Kazakhstan. We had an excellent opportunity to discuss the issues related to power supply and capacity with engineers and current personnel of the plant,” Zhanibek Baidulla, Managing Director of the Center for Strategic Initiatives, said.

After commissioning, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is expected to generate an average of about 35 billion kilowatt-hours per year. This capacity is enough to supply 10 percent of the country's electricity needs. The project is being implemented due to the intergovernmental agreement between Turkey and Russia.

“The Head of State instructed to solve the pressing issue of energy shortage in the country. In this matter, we rely on modern technologies and scientific achievements, including the construction of nuclear power plants. Countries all over the world use this measure to solve their energy crises. We believe that the construction of the nuclear power plant in our country would help address the domestic market’ need for electricity,” Yerzhan Kudaibergen, member of Mazhilis, the lower house of the Kazakh Parliament, noted.

The operation of the NPP in Turkey will reduce emissions of hazardous substances into the atmosphere. They can be reduced by an average of 17 million tonnes per year by replacing the generation of electricity that uses coal and gas.
