Kazakhstan is ready to take its place in the global supply
chain for lithium-ion battery components. At Nazarbayev University (NU),
technologies have already been developed to process ore into finished cathode
materials, with some solutions ready for commercialization. In the near future,
the country may begin exporting not raw materials, but processed components.
Thanks to the efforts of researchers at the university, a pilot production line
for lithium-ion batteries has been launched. There are plans to begin mass
production and train specialists for this emerging industry. Among the
developments are technologies for producing key battery components – nickel,
cobalt, manganese, and iron – using only domestically sourced raw materials.
These advancements in electrochemical energy were discussed at the INESS-2025
international conference in Astana.
«We are currently working with several private companies to
implement our technologies and have begun collaborating with nickel and nickel
mining companies. In partnership with the Ministry of Industry and
Construction, we plan to launch a major pilot production project. Our focus is
on China and the countries we closely collaborate with, particularly in Asia,» said
NU professor Zhumabay Bakenov.
