An international conference dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s Neutrality was held in Ashgabat. The participants discussed the UN’s role in promoting peace, trust, and sustainable development, as well as the contribution of the Central Asian country to the implementation of global initiatives. Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov noted that the country has been consistently strengthening its cooperation with the Organization. Over the past 20 years, more than 560 joint projects worth over $545 million have been implemented. The key areas of partnership include healthcare, education, ecology, and the economy. In particular, UNDP and WHO support the construction of medical centers, programs to improve maternal health, and efforts to combat tuberculosis, while UNICEF promotes children’s education and child rights protection. Special attention was given to environmental issues, climate change, and natural resource management. In addition, Turkmenistan, together with the United Nations, has launched a project to protect the Caspian Sea system.
«We are pleased to see the United Nations’ activities in Turkmenistan continuing to expand. We also welcome the well-established and long-standing strategic cooperation with the Government of Turkmenistan. This partnership continues to gain both momentum and significance for us. During the Strategic Council meeting with the Government, a number of areas for joint action were identified. Our cooperation will therefore continue to develop further,» noted Dmitry Shlapachenko, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan.
Following the conference, the participants adopted an Appeal to the President of
Turkmenistan. Afterwards, a solemn signing ceremony was held for the Sustainable
Development Cooperation Framework between the Government of Turkmenistan and
the United Nations for the next five years, which defines the strategic
priorities of cooperation.
