The Almaty-Kaskelen highway will be widened from four lanes to eight, doubling its capacity. Construction is set to begin on July 20. The announcement was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov on the implementation of the President's directives. The project will be financed through the Development Bank of Kazakhstan and is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2027.
«The project includes eight U-turn facilities and nine pedestrian crossings. Following the modernization, traffic flow along this section will be significantly improved. The construction of new interchanges will also ensure uninterrupted traffic flow,» said Tolegen Abdullin, Chairman of the Roads Committee, Kazakh Ministry of Transport.
The Almaty-Kaskelen highway
remains one of the busiest roads in the Almaty metropolitan area, carrying up
to 60,000 vehicles a day. Another project is also aimed at easing congestion,
with construction already underway on a 32-kilometre alternative road from the
village of Uzynagash. The meeting also reviewed highway projects connecting
Almaty with Esik and Talgar, along with efforts to improve transport
connectivity across the Almaty metropolitan area, including rail transport and
the Almaty Metro.
