First liver transplant successfully performed in Kyzylorda

The first liver transplant was successfully performed in Kyzylorda. The donor for a 40-year-old woman with a severe illness was her relative. Doctors report that both are in stable condition. One of the world’s most complex surgeries was carried out by a team of transplant surgeons led by Professor Bolatbek Baimakhanov, the head of the National Scientific Center of Surgery. Specialists from Kyzylorda also participated in transplanting 65% of the donor’s liver. Thanks to the medical team’s expertise and thorough preparation, the 10-hour operation was successfully completed.

«We performed a liver transplant from a donor to a patient. The surgery was successful, and both the patient and the donor are feeling well. They are in stable condition, and their test results are visibly improving. After this kind of surgery, patients typically stay in the hospital for 20–25 days,» said Zhassulan Baimakhanov, Director of the Kyzylorda Regional Multidisciplinary Hospital.

«I’m feeling good now. I’ll be discharged soon and go home. I’m grateful to my brother for giving me a chance at a healthy life, and to the doctors as well. I feel as though I’ve been born again,» said patient Gulmira Duissebayeva.

Previously, liver transplants in the country were only performed in Almaty and Astana, but now Kyzylorda has joined them. This is a highly in-demand procedure. Currently, around 2,000 Kazakh citizens are on the liver transplant waiting list, including 76 from Kyzylorda. Experts note that the region’s medical advancements and modern hospital equipment allow complex surgeries to be performed locally.
