Experts’ advice: how to prevent children’s winter injuries

“As the old saying goes: To be afraid to fall - not to walk in winter. The modern pace of life increases the number of accidents due to ice-covered ground. Therefore, hundreds of people require hospital care every day. Children and youth, who spend time on the streets more actively than adults, receive more injuries in winter,” said the correspondent Aigerim Akimzhanova.

Experts say that winter injuries and falls occur due to the fact that children do not know how to properly sled, ski, and skate, as well as their non-compliance with safety rules. Adults are advised to always exercise caution and discretion to avoid such accidents.

“With regard to snow games, it is necessary to consider that the equipment should be prepared according to the age of a child. If it’s skis or skates, bindings must always be checked. If it is about a sled, the child needs to be clarified that the sleds should not be hooked to each other, because if the sled overturns, then others may also overturn,” said Kuanysh Alimbetov, spokesperson, National Center of Public Healthcare, Kazakh Health Ministry.

Frostbite is another common winter injury. Tissue damage from cold can occur not only at low temperatures outside, but also at temperatures above zero, especially during heavy snowfall or wet weather, while wearing wet clothes and tight shoes.

“During winter, the effects of temperature changes should be considered, so it is necessary to always dress according to weather conditions. It is necessary to ensure that a child’s hands, nose and face are covered not to let these parts freeze,” said Kuanysh Alimbetov, spokesperson, National Center of Public Healthcare, Kazakh Health Ministry.

Experts also recommend adults to dress children in bright clothes, and even better if they have clothes with reflectors, flickers. Since, in winter, it becomes dark early, and it is dangerous not only for pedestrians, but also for vehicles on slippery surface.
