Digital apocalypse: social media platforms hit by global outage

Social media networks are recovering from the digital apocalypse. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are partially reconnected to the global internet after a major failure. According to experts, work is still underway to reanimate the Internet platforms. They were not available for about six hours. Problems were reported by millions of users around the world. The apps went dark yesterday after 9 pm. The cause of the outage is still unknown, but some experts have linked it to the servers that are used by Facebook. The outage was the largest for the platform since 2008. According to experts, it is difficult to estimate the exact damage at this time, however, losses due to the massive malfunction of major social networks are estimated at US$160 million.

“There have been in the past, of course, attacks against BHB where complete company networks have been rerouted. So, this is not unheard of. But most likely, what we see it’s more likely that it is not a malicious attack and just a normal human mistake, unfortunately,” said cybersecurity expert Candid Wuest.
