Astana hosts conference on rule of law and constitutional oversight

Ahead of Constitution Day, Astana hosted an international conference on the role of the Basic Law in the development of civil society. Experts discussed the significance of constitutional oversight in safeguarding human rights and freedoms. Delegates, including current Constitutional Court judges, members of Parliament, representatives from the OSCE office in Astana, and legal scholars from Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, emphasized the crucial role of citizen involvement in upholding the rule of law. They also highlighted that ensuring constitutional legality is the responsibility of every government body and official.

«As President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev mentioned, the primary goal in modern society is protecting citizens’ rights and providing them with equal freedom. The principle of establishing the rule of law is directly related to the Constitution,» said Berik Bekzhanov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Parliamentarism.

Since the beginning of the year, the Constitutional Court has reviewed over 7,000 appeals from Kazakh citizens. More than 500 existing legal norms were analyzed, and 10 were found to be inconsistent with the Constitution.
