Ancient Kazakh traditions taught in Almaty summer camps

Ethno-style summer camps have opened at schools in Almaty. Primary school students have been spending their holidays there for several years now. A special program immerses children in the traditional lifestyle, customs, and culture of the Kazakh people. They learn to sew national clothing, embroider, carve traditional ornaments, and cook popular traditional dishes. In addition, school students have the opportunity to learn to play the dombyra. Traditional games, such as assyk atu (knocking out knucklebones), are also part of the program.

«This annual ethno-camp brings us, parents, particular joy. First of all, our children take a break from gadgets, which can be both harmful and helpful. Secondly, it brings them closer to our national traditions and helps them learn more about our history. It’s a huge help, and we are very grateful,» shared Almaty resident Sandugash Salmekeyeva.
