Almaty Aport apples as the Kazakh
brand will be registered internationally. Work in that direction is already
underway. The Almaty Region Apple Growers Association (ARAGA) is currently
preparing all necessary documents. According to experts, due to registering
Aport as a geographical indication, this apple variety will become recognizable
throughout the world.
“The application for the ‘Almaty aport’
geographical name was filed on August 29 this year. Thus, the
application will be considered within four months. Yesterday, we found out that
the certificate for the ‘Almaty aport’ geographical indication was issued on October
13. That is, to date, Almaty aport is registered as a geographical indication
under the national procedure,” said Sholpan Abdreeva, the spokesperson for the Kazakh
Ministry of Justice.
It is worth reminding that Kazakh President
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev gave the corresponding instruction in 2019. Almaty
Aport apples should become a recognizable brand in the world on a par with
Roquefort cheese, Parmesan cheese or Bordeaux champagne.
“The association now has to determine the list
of countries, for example, China, Europe or those in the U.S., where they would
like to obtain legal protection of geographical indication. Afterward, the
Kazakh Ministry of Justice and the National Institute of Intellectual Property
will provide advisory assistance in completing and submitting this application,”
added Abdreeva.
