Advancing Women’s Political Leadership in Kazakhstan Discussed at Astana Congress

Kazakhstan is a leader among Central Asian countries in gender equality, according to participants of the I National Congress on Women’s Political Leadership and Gender Equality, currently being held in Astana. Today, women make up 19% of the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament, and 23% of the Senate, the Upper House. Additionally, four government ministries are headed by women. Kazakhstan intends to further strengthen women’s positions in politics. The Congress also proposed introducing a gender budgeting mechanism — an approach that ensures women’s interests are taken into account when allocating public funds.

«Today, we are discussing the importance of supporting women not only in high-level positions, such as in parliament or in government, but also at the regional level. It is essential to create conditions that allow every woman to grow, realize her potential, and eventually assume leadership roles,» Mazhilis member Natalya Dementyeva said.
