Kazakhstan is implementing five investment
projects worth $10 billion in the chemical and metallurgical industries. These
initiatives are aimed at producing export-oriented products with high added
value. Efforts to create high value-added clusters were reviewed at a government
meeting. The construction of a copper smelting plant with a capacity of up to
300,000 tonnes of cathode copper has already begun in the Abai region. In the
Karagandy region, Qarmet plans to carry out a large-scale modernization. The
plant will expand production volumes and introduce new product types for the
machine-building and automotive enterprises. Investment in this project alone
amounts to $3.5 billion. In the Kostanai region, a facility for the production
of hot briquetted iron with an annual capacity of two million tonnes is
planned. Two complexes will be built in the West Kazakhstan and Mangystau
regions, one specializing in the production of potassium chloride, and the
other in ammonia and urea. According to the Cabinet of Ministers, the latter
will meet the needs of the domestic market for mineral fertilizers.
Commissioning is expected in 2029.
